A LITTLE ABOUT Guapo:

One night back in March, someone left Guapo tied up to the fence at our rescue. He was abandoned and confused and having no space at the rescue for him, we found him a foster while he got neutered and his vaccinations.

Over the course of a month we learned more about Guapo. He is so great with people- loving, gentle, and super eager to please. He craves human companionship and just loves to give love and be loved on.

As for dogs- it’s a bit complicated. He showed zero reactivity to dogs while with the foster during the few of the encounters they had with dogs (they live in a rural area) and after some time the foster felt comfortable enough to take him on a walk one afternoon without a leash. During this walk, Guapo unexpectedly attacked another dog. Thankfully both dogs were okay, but this was devastating as we know how nearly impossible it is to find an adult dog with any history of aggression/reactivity a home and by the nature of the fight we knew that this was sadly not his first one.

Left with not many options, we reached out to other rescues in the area for trainer recommendations and found a great board and train located in San Jose del Cabo. We dropped Guapo off about two months ago and he has made amazing progress! He officially has the all clear to graduate the training program, but we have nowhere for him to go and need either a committed foster or adopter ASAP.

Guapo made incredible progress in understanding structure and trust. He has learned to heel calmly on walks, sit, lie down, and hold a stay for up to 20 minutes- even with distractions around him (like other dogs playing fetch or chasing each other around) and is crate trained. He now responds well to a firm but fair tone and is extremely eager to connect with and please his human. Positive reinforcement is his love language, and he thrives when he knows he’s done something right and receives praise or affection in return.

Guapo does well with other dogs after a proper, slow introduction in a safe and controlled environment. However, he should always be kept on leash during walks and needs to be the only dog in the home. The most important thing for his future adopter to know is that Guapo needs clear, consistent boundaries and confident, loving leadership. We will teach any potential adopter exactly what that looks like in order to communicate with him, maintain his progress, and build an amazing connection with him.

FInding a dog like Guapo a home is no easy feat but we are committed to giving him the second chance he deserves.
